In pursuit of overlooked quality companies with economic moats led by thoughtful stewards of shareholder capital
Since my first article in 2006 for The Motley Fool, writing has gone hand-in-hand with my development as an investor. I noticed early on that, as I was writing, I began to think, “What might someone who disagrees with this point say? I should research their point and address it here.” Considering alternative viewpoints lubricates the learning compounding machine.
Writing has also been an outlet for teaching. With over eight years of experience on the buy-side, nearly four on the sell-side, and about six writing for retail investors, there’s a lot I want to share and talk about here.
One of the great things about the investing industry is that there’s a culture and expectation around veteran investors sharing their thoughts rather than hoarding them. We can thank industry pioneers like Ben Graham, Philip Fisher, and of course Warren Buffett for setting this precedent. What I’ve come to appreciate is that this process is a win-win for all parties. What you put out there can come back manyfold.
Flyover Stocks is my new platform to continue this journey.
Why Flyover Stocks? First, it’s an appreciation of being in Ohio – part of “flyover country,” which for the uninitiated is often a pejorative term used to describe the states in between the coasts. I view investing from Ohio as an advantage. Second, I’ve turned over a lot of rocks in my investing career, and I’m continuously surprised by how many quality companies I’ve either missed or failed to appreciate when I initially found them. If other investors fly over them, there might be “coiled spring” opportunities to unlock value among these names. Eventually, investors catch onto great fundamentals.
Finally, my home is located about 40 miles south of Dayton, Ohio, where the Wright Brothers honed their craft, and my wife’s family is on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, where the Wright Brothers took the first heavier-than-air powered machine flight. Their story inspires me and allows me to tell my son and daughter, “See what two kids from Ohio can do?”
If this is your first time reading my content, welcome. And thank you. You can learn more about me and my background here.
A wonderful side effect of writing publicly is connecting with your followers. Indeed, some of my dear friends are people who connected with me over something I wrote. But even if we’re not on each other’s Christmas card lists, we’re learning together and are better for it. I encourage you to reach out to me with any questions or comments you have along the way.
Stay patient, stay focused.
